John is a certified Master of Structured Settlement Consulting (MSSC) and the founder of Serenity Settlements, Inc. dba Atlas Settlements Group. He specializes in medical negligence and other catastrophic cases involving minors and incapacitated adults. He has participated in more than a thousand mediations, settlement conferences and pretrial hearings for the purpose of facilitating resolutions that eliminate the stresses and uncertainty of litigation for all parties and to provide security and peace of mind to injured individuals and their families.
John’s first job in the structured settlement industry immediately out of college was with Galaher Settlements in Boston where he managed the post settlement unit and served as a troubleshooter on difficult cases. This afforded the opportunity to interact with claims handlers, defense attorneys, plaintiff attorneys, structured settlement recipients and structured settlement annuity company pioneers. John’s entry into the business coincided with the development of the tax code concerning periodic payments and as the industry was taking shape. John then started Periodic Payment Professionals dba Niemi & Associates before moving to Chicago to work for MMI Inc., a national healthcare liability insurance company.
At MMI John served as AVP of Claims, specializing in economic damage analysis and settlement negotiation. Over the course of five years with MMI John traveled nearly full time negotiating high exposure cases in hundreds of venues all over the country. When MMI was purchased by St. Paul, (later merged with Travelers) John returned to structured settlement consulting with Arcadia Settlements before joining Atlas Settlements Group.
John has 4 decades experience collaborating with preeminent claim professionals, risk managers and the best trial attorneys on both sides. He has taught and published on the subjects of structured settlements and negotiation and is involved with the NSSTA PAC, which is focused on educating legislators and preserving the benefits of structured settlements for both injured individuals and settling defendants.
John received a BA in Economics and a BA in Organizational Behavior and Management from Brown University (’86). In 2024 he received the MSSC from the University of Texas, Austin in partnership with the National Structured Settlement Trade Association (NSSTA).
